Everything you'd want to know before your first visit — no jargon, no fine print games.
Do most pawn customers lose their merchandise?
No — that's the biggest myth in this business. The large majority of our customers repay their loans and walk out with their items. A pawn loan is designed to be a bridge, not a goodbye: your item is collateral, it's stored safely while you repay, and it's waiting for you the whole time.
Is Cohen Brothers Pawn regulated?
Yes. Pawnbrokers are licensed and regulated under Illinois law, which governs how loans are written, what rates can be charged, and how your property must be handled and stored. We've operated under those rules — and under our own family standards — for over 70 years.
How do you determine an item's value?
We appraise based on what your item is actually worth today: brand, model, age, condition, completeness (boxes, papers, chargers, remotes), and real market demand. For gold, silver, and platinum, we weigh and test the metal against current spot prices. Appraisals are always free, always explained, and never an obligation.
How much should I expect for a loan?
It depends entirely on the item. Loans are based on a portion of an item's resale value — that cushion is what lets us lend without credit checks. Bring your item in and we'll give you a straight number in minutes, and we'll explain exactly how we got there. If you don't like the offer, you simply walk out with your item. No pressure, no fees.
Why use a pawnbroker instead of a bank?
Banks don't write $100 or $500 loans, and when they do lend, it takes applications, credit checks, and days of waiting. A pawn loan takes minutes, requires no credit check, and never affects your credit score — the item itself secures the loan. For fast, small-dollar, short-term cash, a licensed pawnbroker is often the most practical option there is.
How does a pawn loan work?
You bring in an item of value, we appraise it for free and make you a cash offer on the spot. Accept, and you leave with cash while we store your item safely. Repay the loan plus the state-regulated charges within the loan period and your item comes home with you. Need more time? Loans can be renewed. Decide not to repay? You owe nothing further — the item simply covers the loan, and your credit is never touched.
Do you check credit?
Never. A pawn loan is secured by your item, not your history — so there's no credit check, no application, and no effect on your credit score whether you repay or not.
What do I need to pawn an item?
Just the item and a valid state-issued photo ID (you must be 18 or older). That's it — no paperwork, no bank statements, no waiting.
Do you offer layaway or a military discount?
Yes — we're proud to offer a military discount to service members with valid ID, and layaway is available on retail purchases so you can lock in a piece and pay over time. Ask at the counter for details.
What items can't you buy or loan on?
Most items of value qualify, but a few categories don't — things like old CRT TVs, VCRs and outdated media, mattresses and furniture, baby gear, recalled products, and firearms, among others. If you're not sure your item qualifies, the fastest way to find out is to call.
